Evelyn (Julianne Moore) can't seem to connect with her teenage son Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard). She runs a shelter for women who have survived domestic abuse, where she meets Angie (Eleonore Hendricks) and her teenage son, Kyle (Billy Bryk), who are trying to get away from an abusive man. Evelyn envies their tightly knit bond, something she's missing with her own son.
Meanwhile, Ziggy, who performs songs for his podcast, tries to impress his classmate, Lila (Alisha Boe), who's more into politics than pop music.
