Fern Sinclaire's mother dies suddenly of a heart attack. Now alone, the Native American teenager quits school and hides from youth protection services. Inspired by a self-help book, she decides to make it on her own. She lands a job as a concierge at an apartment building, which provides her with housing and two hundred dollars a month, as well as another job at a restaurant. It proves to be too much for her and she struggles to find the time and energy to achieve all that she’s taken on. Things change when her Uncle Jack, whom she hasn’t seen since she was three years old, comes to help her out and give her a guiding hand.
