A Revision

Étienne teaches philosophy at CEGEP. This native Quebecer is particularly fond of Dutch philosopher Spinoza, and it’s for a paper devoted to Spinoza that Nacira, otherwise a good student, obtains less than a passing grade. The reason? The girl used an extract from the Koran in her argument. Étienne had, however, been very clear from the start: religious faith has no place in a work relating to philosophical thought. Disappointed by her teacher, who refuses to revise her grade, Nacira complains to the administration. The director of studies takes up her cause and threatens Étienne with sanction if he does not revise the girl’s grade. Clinging to his principles, Étienne finds himself more and more isolated, when his family and friends, and even his girlfriend, suggest that he give in for the sake of peace.
