Wicked, the movie adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, debuted in the top spot at the weekend box office with an incredible take of $114 million, three times more than the previous highest earning Broadway musical adaptation (Into The Woods, $31 million). Gladiator II starring Paul Mescal debuted in second place with a strong start and a take of $55.5 million.
Red One, a Santa Claus spy thriller starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons, dropped to third in its second weekend at the box office, earning an additional $13.3 million for a two-week total of $52.9 million.
Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin., a thriller about a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, debuted in fourth, taking in $5.1 million.
Rounding out the top five was Venom: The Last Dance starring Tom Hardy. It earned an extra $4 million for a five-week total of $133.8 million.
