O.J. Simpson dead at 76 after battle with prostate cancer

O.J. Simpson has died at the age of 76. His family released a statement on Simpson's X account that read: "On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Simpson was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year and was in hospice care when he passed. He was known for his long NFL career, which he ended to pursue sports commentary and acting but he will be most remembered for the trials for the 1994 murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman — one criminal and one civil.

Although he was found not guilty in the criminal trial, he was found guilty in the civil trial and ordered to pay $33 million in damages. He was later in trouble with the law in October 2008, when he was charged with 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping.

For this latter charge, he was sentenced to 33 years at the Lovelock Correctional Centre in Nevada but was released on parole in 2017.
