Meghan Markle wins in half-sister's defamation case against her

A Florida judge permanently dismissed a defamation lawsuit for $75,000 against Meghan Markle by her half-sister. Samantha Markle claimed she was being defamed by her in public interviews and in her Netflix documentary, but failed to produce actual evidence that supports her claim.

In an Oprah Winfrey interview in 2020, Meghan told Oprah that she grew up as an only child, which struck a chord with her half-sister. Samantha shares the same father as Meghan and believes that the statements Meghan made have minimized their relationship. The judge believes this was not a defamatory statement, but an expression of how she felt as a child.

Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell found that the comments Meghan made were opinions, substantially true, or did not defame Samantha, before throwing out the case. Samantha may try and appeal the decision as she has previously tried to sue Meghan twice for defamation but both times, it was dismissed.

The first and second time she tried to sue, it was because Samantha believed Meghan defamed her by giving information to an unauthorized biography called Finding Freedom and discussing their relationship with Oprah on live television. The judge threw out the case as Meghan did not write the book and believed that the interviews were opinions. ~Mackenzie Heidrick
