Henry Cavill stepping down from Superman role

Published By Tribute on Sep 12, 2018

Henry Cavill as SupermanHenry Cavill is hanging up his red cape for good and leaving his Superman role behind amid talks of the studio behind the movies switching their focus to Supergirl.

Cavill, 35, is reportedly stepping down from his reign as the Man of Steel after lengthy talks over a potential cameo in Shazam! fell through. Sources close to Warner Bros. told The Hollywood Reporter the studio has decided to shift its attention away from Superman in favor of other DC Comics movies, like introducing his cousin Supergirl into the cinematic universe.

Cavill has played Superman in three films since first being awarded the role in the blockbuster hit Man of Steel in 2013. A studio source revealed that another solo Superman movie wasn’t expected to go into production for “at least several years” and admitted “some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.”

“Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run, you have to look at new actors,” the source said.

A Supergirl movie would mean a younger cast, since it would likely be an origin story and would depict Supergirl as a teenage super heroine. This would effectively reset the entire franchise and offer the chance for a younger actor to portray Superman.

Cavill recently signed on to star in the new Netflix series The Witcher as Geralt of Rivia. A Warners source claims this is why the Shazam! cameo fell through due to scheduling conflicts, but another source claims Cavill signed on for the series after the fact.

Cavill isn’t the only one reportedly leaving their DC role in the dust. His Justice League co-star Ben Affleck has been rumored to be retiring his Batman suit either before or after Matt Reeves’ new take on the franchise in his upcoming movie, The Batman, preparing to begin filming in spring 2019.

Following the report from The Hollywood Reporter, Dany Garcia from The Garcia Company, who represents Cavill, took to Twitter and told fans to “be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet.” She added that Warner Bros. will be making a statement about Superman’s fate later today. ~Caitlyn Clancey

kinda sucks. He was in the running previously but lost to Brandon Routh. This was his time to shine and he did. I think he was a great Superman, and I personally wanted to associate the roll with him long term (Like Hugh and Wolverine or RDJ and Iron Man or Chris and Chris as Capt. Am and Thor.) but I guess too many bad decisions by Warner Bros and DC makes it tougher for actors.

Just an FYI, this has not been confirmed by DC Comics, WB, or Henry Cavill himself. this is simply more rumor mill BS that keeps circulating every time DC/WB makes a good move or tries to advance in any way. Ever wonder why we never hear BS articles about Marvel Actors leaving roles, or films being terrible (Cause they are) The Bias is real folks. Unless it comes directly from the Studio or the Actor, dont believe it.

My Superman does not kill people!!!!! This was one of the biggest letdowns in film. How can the guy who did the Watchmen create such a piece of garbage like Man of Steel. An then to follow it up with Batman vs. Superman ??? WTF was DC thinking..... Wonder Woman was awesome!

I find it sad that they still haven't figured it out about casting a person to a certain role that ends up being a perfect fit, one in which people like, but then recasting the role to other actors instead of keeping the same actor in that role. When they recast the role of Batman and Spiderman to other actors, the movie went from bad to worst. Henri Cavill was the perfect fit for the role of Superman, so why change what works and what people want.

Hopefully his Superman exit leads to more "Man From U.N.C.L.E." films. Cavill and Armie Hammer made a great team in the 2015 release!

There is NO definite plans to hang up his cape. The "news" is a rumor at this point.

I sure hope this is just a rumour, because I really liked him in the role...And I don't know why they would go ahead with Supergirl before doing another Superman movie. Those DC guys need to get things right, not keep switching actors out, which is the most frustrating thing for fans. I'm excited for Shazam, and a Superman cameo would be awesome and makes total sense.

Henry did great job as superman, would like him to continue series for 3 or more sequels, as james bond actors has done.

I'm really liking the side news that Ben Affleck might be leaving the Batman franchise, he is the worst Batman.

Cavill was the perfect Superman but given rotten scripts after the first film. Whoever was complaining that Cavill was not American, funny to me as the inventor of Superman was as it turns out, a Canadian.

Superman & Batman movies have been done to death. Put 'em to rest!
