Emmy awards offer surprise proposal plus full winners list

Rachel Brosnahan in The Marvelous Mrs. MaiselThe 70th annual Emmy Awards celebrated more than just television Monday night as Oscars director Glenn Weiss utilized his acceptance speech to propose to his girlfriend.

While accepting the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, Weiss paid special tribute to his mother who died just two weeks earlier, saying she was particularly fond of his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen.

“Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan,” he told the audience inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

A tearful Svendsen joined Weiss on stage to accept the proposal and the two earned a standing ovation from the audience, with stars like Saturday Night Live performer Leslie Jones visibly emotional over the touching moment. Weiss then gave Svendsen the ring his dad gave his late mom over 65 years ago.

“And to my sisters and brothers, I didn’t swipe it,” he quipped. “Dad knows I have it, okay?”

This year’s Emmy awards were hosted by Saturday Night Live writers Michael Che and Colin Jost, and had plenty of big moments in the night beyond a touching proposal. Happy Days star Henry Winkler finally won an Emmy, taking home the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as acting coach in HBO’s comedy Barry. The actor, who has been nominated for an Emmy six times before, took to the stage to accept his award and joked, “I wrote this 43 years ago.”

His co-star, Bill Hader, won his first solo Emmy award as Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in the title role.

Amazon Studios' The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won for Best Comedy Series, with Rachel Brosnahan, the star of the series, taking home Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

The 2018 Emmys also featured the most diverse slate of nominees in history, with 36 of those up for acting awards being of a visible minority.

These Emmys were originally designed to show Best of... on mainstream tv. Now it is all about specialty channels nly it seems. Not everyone can afford to have all the channels in the world. Am really disappointed that there are no regular shows listed among the winners. Here is one person who will no longer be watching the Emmys as I've certainly no way to even judge these shows. Such a disappointment.
