Broadway star's leg amputated due to COVID-19 complications

Tony Award-nominated actor Nick Cordero had his right leg amputated due to coronavirus complications.

On Saturday, his wife Amanda Kloots revealed on Instagram in a video: "We got some difficult news yesterday. We took him off the blood thinners, but that again was going to cause the clotting in the right leg, so the right leg will be amputated today."

She revealed he was "doing good" and added: "He’s doing the best he possibly can. Surgery went well. He’s recovering well after surgery. His blood pressure is okay. His heart is okay.

"His internal bleeding has come down. Everything seems to be calmed down which is so great because this has been such a roller coaster."

The Canadian singer/actor, 41, was admitted to the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on March 31 and was on a ventilator. He had emergency surgery after blood thinners to stop blood clots in his leg caused internal bleeding.

On April 11, she wrote: "He lost consciousness, he lost his pulse and they had to resuscitate him. It was very scary. They had a very hard time getting him back."

In another post, she continued: "I’m told the fact that he made it through the surgery is a win. We are taking any and all wins right now." A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created to pay his medical bills, and has raised more than $200,000 for his treatment.

COVID-19 has affected other Broadway stars, including Aaron Tveit, Danny Burstein, Laura Bell Bundy, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally lost his life to the virus.

The Corona 19 virus starts super inflammation in the body and it can go wild. Blood thinners (like Warfarin) can be tricky. If the virus can make your immune system go nuts it could certainly make meds change in the body. He is a very luck man to be alive. So glad for him and his family that he made it!

It doesn't say when he went on blood thinners, but it's possible he got a blood clot just from being stuck in bed in hospital. The blood thinners caused internal bleeding, I assume from the intense coughing of COVID-19. To stop that bleeding, they had to stop the blood thinners, and doing so causes a worsening of blood clots. It was a blood clot in his leg that stopped the blood flow and caused the need to amputate.

I'm sorry he lost his leg, but it was a lot of things that led up to him losing his leg. They are blaming everything on the virus. And why was he on blood thinners to begin with. Does he have another medical problem? Anyone that gets an lung infection or infection any where else in their body takes the chance of this happening. Anyone that is in a bed with out movement for long periods of time, can have this happen. People with COPD, asthma, (which is basely the virus) have the chance of something like this happening. The virus was not the main reason or even the reason for what happened. Not enough information. I believe this is yet another scare tactic.
