Anne Heche in a scene from The Last Word (2017)Anne Heche has died of the injuries she sustained last Friday (August 5, 2022). She was 53.

The actress was involved in two crashes with her Mini Cooper in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles, including one that resulted in a house fire. The homeowner and her pets were able to get out unharmed, but Heche was in critical condition, although firefighters confirmed she had been speaking to them as she was cut free from her car and taken to hospital. Shortly afterwards, she fell into a coma. This afternoon, TMZ announced that she was "brain dead," which is the definition of dead under California law. She will be taken off life support after determining if her organs were viable, as per her wishes to be an organ donor.

Yesterday, Heche's team released a statement that read, "Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive."

Her family released a statement this afternoon that read: "We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend. Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact."

Heche is known for her roles in the movies I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)Donnie Brasco (1997) and Six Days Seven Nights (1998). Her upcoming film Girl in Room 13 (2022) is still set to release on Lifetime this September. She leaves behind two sons -- Homer, 13, and Atlas, 20. ~Claudia Minardi

So sad. She had such a troubled life, battling mental illness, sexual abuse as a child, substance issues. This is tragic that she was never able to turn it around.

Sam, what does her tragic past have to do with "turning it around?" She did "turn it around." She had a successful career. She persevered. That she died this way so young is the tragedy. Savor everyday my friends, you never know when the breath may be your last. <3

I was so sad to hear about Anne Heche's passing. I thought she was such a doll and good actress. Seems like there are so many people these days that pass away too early in their lives. R.I.P. Anne

Anne's "Tree-Top" commitment to her profession was an award for all of us.

By turn it around I meant conquer her demons and have a happy personal life in addition to a successful career.

I do have empathy for her personal addictions she was dealing with, but if she didn't seek help and she chose to drink and do drugs then get behind the wheel. She is damn lucky she is the only person who was physically hurt. The family who's house she smashed into didn't make a decision to drink and do drugs and crash their house into her car. She could have killed someone else! She still destroyed their house! Their belongings! Their family pictures etc. I hope they have insurance, but there's still a large deductible they'd have to pay and they still have NOTHING based on the actions of an actress who did something incredible selfish. Sure, people have been saying she has demons or addiction is a disease, but she was a working actress and was not seeking help for her issues. Not a single person would be talking about Anne Heche and feeling sorry for her if their house was destroyed or if someone they were close to died in the house! This is the consequences of her own actions. I have some empathy that it sucks that she did not seek help and she passed away from her own actions, but I do not have sympathy. If my kids were hit or killed, I would find it really difficult to have a single care in the world for her. I'm sure I will get backlash form my rant and I'm sure people will say everyone makes a mistake, sure I do too, but I wouldn't drink and drive! Rolling the dice and the potential outcome is clearly selfish.
