Shortly after crossing the border of Kazakhstan, Charles, a teacher from Paris, runs out of gas. He continues on foot, turning down several offers of a lift. On his way, he meets a young Kazakh woman, Ulzhan, who teaches French at a local school. When he buys a horse from her family, she decides to join him on his journey, despite the fact that Charles wants to be alone.
