I saw this my 11 yr old daughter and we both enjoyed it. It's a poignant story of bravery and friendship in the face of hardship and injustice. Beautifully filmed and acted. Definitely recommend this as a family film.

This is a touching, thought-provoking movie. I teared up several times. Great acting and a great story.

Very poignant, inspiring life story of Lisel. It depicts the importance and benefits of knowing how to read. War bring so much pain and sufferings in peoples lives. There is so much love, caring, respect and trust of all the main characters. Love it and will recomemd to my friend to see it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. There were surprises, experiences of various emotions and very good story telling. You get to know each character and feel for them.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

This movie was heart wrenching, sweet, suspenseful, touching...it truly played with all your emotions from scene to scene. Very well done.

"The Book Thief," is adapted from Markus Zusak's best-selling novel. At first I was skeptical. Not sure if this was going to be a boring documentary. How mistaken I was! Awesome movie.... from the very beginning to the end. The best movie I have seen in a very long time. There was humor and seriousness. There were tears of joy and tears of sadness. Very emotional. The story is based on events that took place during the First World War. Sophie Melisse played the part of Liesel... a very feisty girl. Superb acting! The movie is based on the story of Liesel a communists, who comes to live with her adopted parents Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush) and his not so cheerful wife Rosa (Emily Watson). L

I really enjoyed the movie. Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nelisse were wonderful in their roles. It showed how a family is sometimes made in even tragic circumstances.

I was a little worried that this could be another sad, depressing movie about this terrible period of history. But it wasn't. The charming young lead actress, Sophie Nélisse (Canadian), made the movie a pleasure to watch, along with her more well-known co-stars. The narrator, Death, who is sympathetic to humans and dislikes war, seems unnecessary to the movie, but luckily the voice-over doesn't happen much. Amidst this terrible war, along with the persecution and accompanying fears of the times, the movie is really about a fostered girl trying to adapt to her new circumstances. I haven't read the award-winning book on which the movie was based, but this touching and very special movie makes

The Book Thief is beautifully photographed with a poingnant story very well acted by everyone that has a lovely Disneyesque jewel-like quality to it. Wonderful to see Emily Watson in a movie again.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

First of all: I really enjoyed the photography and the music of this film. The story is based in Markus Zusak's novel so the original point of view of World War II came from there, however the good performances of Sophie Nélisse, Ben Schnetzer, Nico Liersch and, of course, Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush enhance what the imagination might have brought, earlier, from the book. It is a story that keeps the viewer expecting what is going to happen next. Some details are a little weird, though, especially one at the end when the story arrives to the present time. Other than that, it is a good option for those who run away from commercial movies.

I was surprised to 'win' tickets to a premiere of The Book Thief thanks to [...] I have not read the book, but have heard through a couple of friends that it is 'one of their favourite books of all time.' The film stars Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson (two great actors by my standards) and two of the most gorgeous and gifted 'child actors' I've ever seen. I was astounded by the acting of the young female lead Lisel and her friend Rudy (with a mop of impossibly blonde hair) The plot and sub-plots are very believable and quite heart wrenching. A scene of German WWII children in school uniforms (complete with embroidered Nazi patch on their sleeve) singing a patriotic song (a choir) in front of

A great movie, I want to go read the book now!

The serious plot with sort of Boris Karloff narrator would be O.K for children from 10 to 17the horror of the war was Hollywoodizesd ,all too obvious for n adult audience

My wife and myself both enjoyed this excellent movie. Shame the advertisements for it aren't better. They don't show the warmth of the characters or how this movie captures the time. One of the best family movies this fall.

The movie was humorous in all the right moments despite the grim drama. I enjoyed it.

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

I found the film riveting but at times quite sad. Of course there were many light and happy moments and the two lead children were excellent.

User review rating: 3 November 08, 2013

The movie was enjoyable but a bit drawn out. The young actress was very impressive. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between the girl and her new parents and the man they were hiding who would eventually become her husband.

Pretty, pretty, pretty good!

I love the movie! Wasn't sure what to expect from the trailers, but what I saw at the cinema was amazing. Everything seemed to fall into place so well. I would recommend and watch this movie several time over.

"The Book Thief" is a film set in Nazi Germany and adapted from Markus Zusak's best-selling novel with the same name. The opening scene sets the tone of the film with Death as the fatigued narrator, commenting on how busy he is during WWII Germany, and how he is haunted by humans' ability to be responsible for such extreme tragedy and beauty at the same time. Superbly acted, and beautifully written, "The Book Thief" gives us a glimpse of the turmoil, fears and joys experienced by everyday Germans, and those persecuted, during this era.

A beatifully filmed, well acted adaptation. Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson are terrific. As are the young actors. Go see this film! You won't be disappointed.

This movie was great, it really made me want to read the book.

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

I really love all the ups and downs. It progressed at a very good pace. I would totally recommend this movie to anyone.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

what a great movie, but of course it has Geoffrey Rush.Movies like this help us understand the past, but nothing replaces the book.

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

Excellent movie in all ways. Although it is a story set in a very sad and painful part of History, the movie is very well done and the actors carrie it beautifully. Loved it. Cried, laughed, great movie.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

A very enjoyable movie for its amazing actors, unique storytelling style, and wonderful story!

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

"I laughed and I cried, I laughed and I cried" I was able to connect with the story and feel the emotions of the characters. What a pleasant surprise!

User review rating: 3 November 08, 2013

The pacing of this movie is a little choppy. Sometimes the camera lingers too long on the face of the little girl, Liesel, as if only to let the audience see how lovely she is. It didn't add to the emotional tone or the story. The events didn't unfold or flow nicely either. Editing problem? However, the performances of the lead actors were all good, especially Emily Watson playing the foster mother. I particularly liked the scene in which she came to school to inform Liesel that Max is alright but she pretended that she came to scold Liesel so as not to arouse any suspicion. As a whole, it's a good movie to see given it's from the perspective of a German child who also had to endu

Awesome! The story is dense and full of sensation. It could be more profound if there would be more scene of historic value. Thus, it could become a great masterpiece of its genre. It must turn into a major thriller though.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

Great character development. A truly heartfelt, entertaining, and touching movie!

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

Very inspirational and touching movie! Great character development and plot. I watched this movie with my wife, and we both loved how the movie unfolded. Although the actors/actresses are not well known, they performed great. Highly recommended!

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

I really loved The Book Thief! The two main child actors were amazing as well as the emotional performances of the parents. I was also inspired by this story of perseverance during difficult times and of the power of a loving family. I highly recommend this film especially if you love books and words!

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

I thought it was a lovely story even though there were definitely some sad moments. It was definitely an eye opener to not only what the Jewish people faced during the Holocaust but also the German people.

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

the movie is amazing, very close to the book and the cast transports the magic from the novel in all the ways

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

Excellent movie.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

I thought the story was very inspiring and the acting was amazing. The movie was over 2 hours long but you sure did not notice as the movie kept your interest.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

The movie was better than I thought it would be. The young girl was very good!

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

We enjoyed watching the movie a lot. I got quite emotional in some scenes...but overall, it was very entertaining.

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

The movie is quite faithful to the book and is quite intense. Liesel Meminger, is played by the wonderful 13-year-old French-Canadian newcomer Sophie Nelisse.I would recommend the viewing of this movie for his depiction of life under nazi rules.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

A moving account of a young girl during WWII Germany and the hardships she endured. Being sent to live with a new family, making new friends, hiding a young Jewish boy, all while reading books and opening her mind to new worlds. A must see movie!!

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

Well written and acted. A little slow moving at first, but still really enjoyable. Haven't read the book the movie is based on, but I think now I will.

User review rating: 4 November 08, 2013

a tremendous film, with Academy Award performances by the three principals, time very well spent indeed

User review rating: 5 November 08, 2013

So sad and enriching at the same time. Exquisite acting by all and powerful on all levels.

User review rating: 3 November 08, 2013

Although the subject matter of the movie was really serious, I thought it maintained a good balance with the intensity of the time period, the relationships forged and the incredible humour. Geoffrey Rush as always is stellar, but the others were not too far behind. The cinematography was great as well - I felt I was there along with everyone. Overall, a good movie.
