When Mary Ann (Laura Linney) returns home to San Francisco, she is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross). She recounts her story of coming to live at 28 Barbary Lane and the communal housing that is located there. The home is more than a home as the matriarch of 28 Barbary Lane, Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), creates an environment for people to choose their own families and create their own stories. It's here were Mary Ann and Shawna are drawn into the lives of members of the LGBT community.
