By Valentine's Day in 1962, the Draper's marriage seems to be on the mend. Peggy, who has returned to work, has also taken up horseback riding. She ignores the advances of another rider named Arthur. After Joan and Roger split, she soon becomes engaged to a medical student named Greg, who rapes her.

For his part, Don has a new client at work - a comedian named Jimmy Barrett. Don winds up having an affair with Barrett’s wife, Bobbie, but soon finds himself in hot water when he realizes Bobbie and several other women around town are gossiping about his sexual escapades. Don gets back at Bobbie but it's too late - Betty knows about the affair and kicks Don out.

Bad behavior from the "mad men" continues as Roger proposes marriage to a secretary and separates from his wife. Betty, to her horror, finds out she's pregnant and considers getting an abortion, but is convinced by her doctor to keep the baby. In the midst of the Missile Crisis, Betty sleeps with a stranger she meets at a bar, but returns home to find a letter from Don.
