Kinetta Movie Poster

Taking place at the eponymous rundown resort just outside of Athens, Kinetta is the second feature of director Giorgos Lanthimos, who co-wrote the script with Yorgos Kakanakis. The loosely structured elliptical narrative concerns three unnamed characters -- a cop (Kostas Xikominos), a photographer (Aris Servetalis), and a chambermaid (Evangelia Randou).

There have been several murders of young women in the area, and the cop has apparently enlisted the maid to help him reenact the crimes, while the photographer records the reenactments. At other times, the cop obsesses about a new BMW he wants to buy, and provides counterfeit documents to Russian women, who are illegal immigrants.

The photographer struggles with his attraction to the maid as he drives her to and from their reenactments, and tends to the many minor injuries she sustains while playing the victim.

For her part, she seems more concerned with the quality of her performance (she spends a lot of time rehearsing) than in any extracurricular involvement with her co-workers. It's all shot on the fly with a constantly moving handheld camera.

Kinetta was shown at the Walter Reade Theater as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Film Comment Selects series in 2006.
