Jean Jones (Taylour Paige) is an aspiring writer whose underwhelming personal life and undesirable career prospects have left her with little to no hope for the future. While awaiting her big break, she finds herself spending a lot of time bickering with her mother, two aunts, and grandmother, Daphne (Michelle Hurst).

Just when Jean thinks that her family couldn't get any more dysfunctional, a man comes to their doorstep looking for her grandmother, and when she appears, he suddenly drops dead. This mysterious man turns out to be the estranged patriarch of their family, one that Daphne has long kept hidden.

Naturally, the women call 911 in order to get their unexpected father/grandfather to a hospital. They are greeted by an adorable paramedic named Ray (Mamoudou Athie), who immediately falls for the beautiful and darkly witty Jean. However, now is clearly not the best time for Jean to begin a new romance, as she is faced with a Pandora's box of family secrets that may or may not change her life forever.
