Amazing movie about a real family situation... You should see this movie!!!

Every minute of this film was cringeworthy. The dialogue was so pedestrian, I'm sure it was improvised. The interactions between husband Erwin and wife Kate were so awkwardly formal and distant that I remained unconvinced that they were a married couple, even one that was obviously breaking down. The film used frequent close-up shots. Normally used to create a more intimate connection with a film's characters, the main characters lacked sufficient depth for this to be something desirable. The only performances that were in any way compelling were those of Erwin's 2 little boys, and only at times. The single notable attempt at humour in the film elicited a brief smirk from the audience, but before you could say "use a cup of Tim Horton's coffee to simulate the act of urination," it was back to the mechanical sequence of character interactions. Once the basic premise is established (Emotionally-avoidant Dad with low frustration tolerance tries to escape his family responsibilities in various ways) the film does little else but coast until the end. 10 minutes from the credits rolling, I thought there might be a denouement that made the whole banal affair worthwhile, but no such luck. I found my own imagination was coaxing Erwin to either do something terribly evil or the opposite - to at least make some significant attempt at reconciliation with his long-suffering wife Kate but none was forthcoming. The movie ended with the same aimless, unresolved ennui that Erwin struggled with throughout the film. What was the point of all that? If the film was trying to be a vignette of Canadian reservedness and cultural anemia then it was successful but I don't want to pay 14 bucks to see that. Even if it was a deep portrayal of the existential malaise that some middle-aged men feel, the actual vehicle used to convey that message was so mechanical that I wonder if the writer/director is himself extremely bored.
