Saddened by the death of his Aunt Eleanor, who used to read him stories, Nathaniel is disappointed when he learns that she has left him all of the books in her library. Because despite his seven years, Nathaniel is still unable to read. But there's something more pressing: all the protagonists from the books on the shelves of the library come alive at night to tell the boy of the danger they face. Natanael has only one day to read a magic formula that will ensure their survival. Realizing the boy can't read, the fairy Carabosse makes him tiny so he can enter the world of fairy tales and accomplish his mission with the assistance of Alice's White Rabbit and the Ogre. Meanwhile, Nathaniel's parents agree to hand over the precious books to a dealer to pay for renovations on the rundown property they've inherited from Eleanor.
