Nanjing, capital of China, December 1937. The Imperial Japanese Army launches a major offensive to enter the city. They manage to break the last defenses, leaving the Chinese soldiers weak and disorganized. Though much of the population desperately tries to flee, the Japanese troops have surrounded the city. Others hide but the Japanese begin a major massacre in which enemy soldiers are shot, civilians murdered and women, regardless of age, die after being raped non-stop.
Amid this chaos, Masao Kadokawa, a young Japanese officer outraged by the cruelty, finds comfort with a Japanese prostitute, with whom he falls in love.
