In the trailer for Because We Are Girls, we are introduced to a happy Punjabi family with three daughters, living in Canada. After their older male cousin comes to live with them, the sisters are told to respect him, in accordance with traditional Punjabi rules that dictate female subservience. One of the daughters, Jeeti, was 11 when he arrived and she was raped by him soon after. Her two sisters were also raped, but all three kept quiet because of the rules of being a Punjabi girl. They even hid the truth from each other because they felt shame. Years later, the girls, now adults, come forward after finding out their cousin is still abusing girls.
