Louise, an unstable actress in her forties, is from a wealthy Italian family that immigrated to France to escape the Red Brigades. She begins an affair with Nathan, a fellow actor 20 years her junior. Louise tells Nathan she wants to have a child with him, but the young man, who leads a carefree life, isn’t keen on the idea of becoming a father.
Her happiness is further clouded by the deterioration of the family castle in Piedmont and her brother Ludovic’s impending death from AIDS. The local mayor suggests opening the castle to visitors to help pay for the upkeep but Ludovic, his health quickly deteriorating, is especially unwilling to let go of the past.
