The son of a deadbeat father, J.R. (Tye Sheridan) moves in with his grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) and is raised by his uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck). Growing up, J.R. spends his time at his uncle's bar, The Dickens, developing a strong relationship with his uncle and the bar's patrons. Not very good at sports, Charlie suggests J.R. to read books instead and aspire to become a writer. Seeing the potential J.R. has, Charlie teaches him the ins and outs of life, as he proudly watches him grow up to become a man.
