In 19th century New York City, when the "new money" Russell family moves into an elite neighborhood, the old time residents are aghast. Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) is also new to the neighborhood, having moved in with her aunts Agnes Van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon). Aunt Agnes forbids her from associating with the Russells and anyone who isn't from "old money." However, Agnes approves of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), whom Marian met on the train to New York, and hires her as her personal secretary despite the uproar that having a Black woman on the staff causes with some of the servants.
