Thomas studied acting at New York University and became a certified Actor Combatant. He has made appearances in many stage productions with the Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Hanger Theatre and The Alliance Theatre.

From stage he moved on to television and film, appearing on New York Undercover and landing a recurring role on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live.

For film, Thomas has quickly made his way up from minor roles to starring roles. Small parts in Courage Under Fire (1996) and Conspiracy Theory (1997) proved his worth, and it wasn't long until he began starring in films like Cruel Intentions (1999), Save the Last Dance (2001) alongside Julia Stiles, Barbershop and the sequel, Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004).

In April 2006 he married actress Aonika Laurent.
