RJ Cyler was born in Jacksonville, Florida. The youngest of three boys, he taught himself to play drums and keyboard at an early age. He also formed a dance group with one of his brothers.
In 2012, RJ travelled to California to take part in acting camp. He enjoyed the experience so much that he convinced his family to relocate to Los Angeles.
Soon after, he landed an agent and in 2014, was cast in the indie movie Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015), which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
RJ is currently playing a role in the HBO series Vice Principals.
