Born in Augusta, Maine but raised in New England, Rachel Nichols first caught the attention of a modeling scout while attending Columbia University in New York City, from which she graduated with a major in Economics with a concentration in psychology.

Nichols broke into acting with her first audition when she landed a featured role on the hit TV series Sex and the City. She followed that with her movie debut in the feature film Autumn in New York (2000), starring Richard Gere.

In 2003, she starred as Jessica in the prequel to Dumb and DumberDumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. The following year she made a guest appearance on the TV series Line of Fire, before landing a role in The Amityville Horror (2005), starring Ryan Reynolds.

In 2005, Nichols played regular roles on two different TV series— Fox's The Inside and ABC's Alias. Meanwhile, on the big screen, she found herself more and more in demand, accepting roles in Steve Martin's Shopgirl (2005), Resurrecting the Champ (2006) with Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett, Charlie Wilson's War (2007) starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and she starred as Gaila in Star Trek (2009).

Nichols married producer Scott Stuber in 2008 but they are currently separated.
