Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Monica got her start in acting at the age of twelve when she began modeling and doing commercials. She relocated to Los Angeles in 1994 to seriously pursue her acting career and soon landed a role on The Young and the Restless.
Potter gained wide exposure in 1998 when she starred opposite Robin Williams in the true-to-life movie Patch Adams. She also starred opposite Billy Crudup in the Robert Towne film, Without Limits, which traces the career of the legendary runner Steve Prefontaine. Potter portrayed the real-life character Mary Marckx, Prefontaines' girlfriend who saw a side of him that not many people knew. When the filmmakers first saw Potter, they were dazzled by her beauty and vulnerability and felt she had the right combination of naiveté and strength to embody the character. The film was produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner.
In August of 1999, Potter was seen starring in the charming Miramax film The Very Thought of You. Directed by Nick Hamm, the story revolves around a young woman from Minnesota who decides to leave her mundane life and move to London where she meets Frank, Daniel and Laurence. Leading roles in Along Came a Spider (2000) with Morgan Freeman and Saw (2004), with Cary Elwes, followed.
