Athlete A refers to Maggie Nichols, an elite American gymnast who reported sexual abuse at the hands of USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. We see that although the parents of some of the gymnasts wanted to call authorities, Steve Penny, the CEO of the gymnastics organization told them not to, that he would do so. However, he kept the abuse quiet for years, and finally, journalists at the media outlet IndyStar exposed USA Gymnastics for turning a blind eye to the abuse of at least 500 little girls, as they chose instead to protect Nassar.
