Jacob began acting in 1987 at age seven, when he played a role in the TV movie Ford: The Man and the Machine. The following year he had roles in two films — Horses in Winter and Pin — and made appearances on the TV show Extra! Extra! and the TV movie Hitting Home. By 1990 he had starring roles on two TV series — Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Dracula: The Series. His first starring film role was in the 1993 movie Josh and S.A.M., playing Josh. The movie also starred Joan Allen and Jake Gyllenhaal. The same year, Jacob won a YTV Achievement Award for Acting.
Jacob continued to work steadily as an actor through the years and in 2002, made his screenwriting and directorial debut with the short film Dad, based on a story by Tygh Runyan. The following year he directed and wrote his first feature, Twist, which was a modern retelling of Charles Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist, with the main character a gay hustler in modern-day Toronto. It was nominated for four Genie awards, including one for Best Adapted Screenplay. Jacob and co-writer Ron Proulx won a Genie for Best Achievement in Music - Original Song for the song "Pantaloon in Black."
When not acting, Jacob was hard at work on his next film, The Trotsky, which he directed and wrote. Starring his longtime friend and fellow Montreal born actor, Jay Baruchel, the film enjoyed much success, including Audience Awards at the 2009 Atlantic Film Festival and the 2009 Tokyo International film Festival. It also won two Genies, including one for Best Original Screenplay.
In 2012, Jacob and Jay Baruchel were both part of the Air Canada enRoute Film Festival Jury.
Fluent in French, Jacob has continued to work as both an actor and a director/screenwriter through the years. He directed nine episodes of the YTV series Game On and 11 episodes of the hit CBC series Mr. D., which has enjoyed six seasons so far.
In 2016, Jacob co-created the sitcom Letterkenny, and plays a regular role on the series as Pastor Glen.
