Born in Connecticut, Gretchen Mol is a graduate of the William Esper Studio and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. She began acting professionally in commercials and theater productions such as Bus Stop and Godspell.

She starred in the London run of the play The Shape of Things, then joined the rest of the cast when it opened off-Broadway. She also appeared in the film version, which debuted at the 2003 Sundance Festival.

Gretchen made her film debut in Spike Lee's Girl 6 (1996) as Girl 12. Since then she has appeared in such films as Music from another Room (1998) with Jude Law, Forever Mine (1999) with Joseph Fiennes, The Shape of Things with Rachel Weisz (2003) and played the title role in The Notorious Bettie Page (2006).

In the winter of 2003-2004, she starred on Broadway as Roxie Hart in Chicago. She has also appeared on television in Spin City (1996), the telefilm Picnic (2000) and was a regular in David E. Kelly's short-lived drama series on the Fox network, Girls Club.

In 2007, Gretchen acted in the western 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and appeared in the 2008 film An American Affair.

More recent big screen ventures include the 2015 film Anesthesia, 2016's The Headhunter's Calling, and the 2016 drama Manchester by the Sea with Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams.

On the small screen, she played Nina Robertson on the Amazon Prime series Mozart in the Jungle in 2015, and Dr. Agatha Matheson on the 2018 SyFy series Nightflyers.

Gretchen has been married to screenwriter/director Tod Williams since 2004. The couple have two sons, born in 2007 and 2011.
