Born in Niles, Ohio, Sena began his career as a cameraman during the early 1980s. He worked on over 100 music videos and was honored with a variety of awards for his inventive cinematography, including the Eastman Kodak Certificate of Visual Excellence.

In 1985 he began to direct, creating videos for many artists including Sting, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Bryan Adams, Steve Winwood, Fleetwood Mac and Janet Jackson. He even earned a Grammy for his work on Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1914.

Sena has also won awards for his many commercials for Nike, Saturn, Acura, Apple Computer and IBM. In 1991, '95 and '96, his commercials won top honors at New York's prestigious AICP awards show and have been made part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

Sena made his feature film debut in 1993 with Kalifornia starring Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes. The film earned the International Film Critics Jury Prize at the 1993 Montreal Film Festival.

His third film, Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), about a car thief, starred Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. Sticking to the reluctant thief idea, Sena followed that up with Swordfish (2001), starring John Travolta.

After taking a break for a few years, Sena returned to the big screen with Whiteout (2009), starring Kate Beckinsale.
