Diana Scarwid was born in Savannah, Georgia. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York, Scarwid honed her craft while at the school in productions of Romeo and Juliet, The Women and Craig’s Wife.

On stage, she has appeared in the National Shakespeare Festival production of Spoon River Anthology in New York, and in productions of Gethasmine Springs and Key Rube in Los Angeles, at the Mark Taper Forum.

Scarwid started her film career in television playing Casey Walker in the TV movie In the Glitter Palace (1977). Remaining in televison films for the next three years, she made her feature film debut in Inside Moves (1980). Playing the character Louis, a junkie hooker, Scarwid garnered the only Oscar nomination for the film.

For the next few years, Scarwid would weave her way in and out of film and television movies, but remained out of the spotlight except for a few blockbuster films like Silkwood (1983), Heat (1987) and the HBO original movie, Truman(1995). She was nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Bess, in Truman.

She has also made some notable TV guest appearances in shows like The X Files, The Outer Limits, and Hawaii Five-O.

Scarwid also appeared in What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, and The Angel Doll.
