Born in Staten Island, New York, Christina Aguilera wanted to be a singer from a very young age. In 1993, Aguilera was chosen to be a Mouseketeer in The Mickey Mouse Club, the same year Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake joined the cast. Prior to The Mickey Mouse Club, in 1990, at the age of nine, Aguilera appeared on national television as a contestant on the show, Star Search. After that, she became known for singing the national anthem in her hometown of Pittsburgh at baseball, hockey and football games. At 18, Aguilera released her breakthrough hit, "Genie in a Bottle" from her self-titled debut album.
After her initial success, Aguilera earned several music awards including a Grammy, two MTV Music Video Awards and two VH1 Awards. Citing her influences as Whitney Houston, Etta James and other strong-voiced musicians, Aguilera dominated the pop scene in 1999 and into the early millenium. She also released a Spanish album entitled "Mi Reflejo."
The songstress with Ecuadorian-Irish roots has one son with Jordan Bratman. Bratman and Aguilera announced their separation on October 12, 2010 after five years of marriage. Aguilera has also been involved with many non-profit environmental organizations as well as breast cancer research organizations and human rights groups.
Aguilera was initially offered the role of Stephanie Necrophuros in Nine but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts and the release of her new album. She made her starring feature film debut in Burlesque alongside Cher, playing a smalltown Iowa girl looking to escape her past by working as a waitress at a burlesque lounge. Prior to this role, Aguilera's acting experience came from doing cameos in TV shows such as Entourage and in the 2010 movie Get Him to the Greek.
