Born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Brent Butt was the youngest of seven children. Early on, he discovered that being funny was a good way to be noticed. Having honed his comedy in school, in 1988 he began pursuing a career as a stand-up comedian. Within months he was headlining top clubs and festivals across Canada and within a couple of years he was touring internationally.
Brent made his first TV appearance with a guest spot on the series Maniac Mansion. Guest roles on shows such as Millennium and The X-Files followed. He also appeared as a comic on a number of television specials such as Comics! and Comedy Now! Meanwhile, he was also busy creating his own TV sitcom, Corner Gas, which was an instant hit in 2004 when it debuted. It won numerous accolades over the course of its six-season, 107-episode run, including six Gemini Awards, a number of Canadian Comedy Awards, and a nomination for the International Emmy Awards. Brent also won three Writers Guild of Canada Awards for the show.
Corner Gas was seen in over 26 countries including the United States, and the final episode of the series was the highest-rated on record for a Canadian scripted series. Brent’s follow-up series Hiccups ran for two seasons, garnering multiple Leo awards along the way. In 2008 Brent was awarded the Comedy Network Sir Peter Ustinov Award at the 29th edition of the Banff World Television Festival and in 2012 he was given a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to community and country.
In 2005, Brent married Nancy Robertson, his Corner Gas co-star, who played Wanda on the series.
