During a vacation with her family, Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts) suffers a terrible accident that leaves her paralyzed from the waist down. When her son Noah (Griffin Murray-Johnston) finds an injured magpie on the beach and names it Penguin for its black and white feathers, she's not sure that it's a good idea. Sam reasons that a wild bird doesn't want to be stuck inside. Trapped in her wheelchair and feeling sorry for herself, she begins to care for the bird.
